From Wanganderry Stock yards we follow the Bonnum Pic track. Leaving the fire trail there are a couple of steep gullies to negotiate before joining an old fire trail and then a bush track leading to the escarpment. From the escarpment we follow the track to Bonnum Pic. Wildflowers are prolific and the views are spectacular. HAZARDS: Steep rough track, slippery creek crossing, fallen trees, unfenced cliff edges. All but the lst 500 metres is a grade 4 walk. We will be stopping just short of the Pic which is extremely steep with deep drop-offs and should only be attempted by persons with good climbing skills. No RSVP required. To avoid the crowd in Rhododendron Festival on the first Saturday of November, we will visit Blackheath for it's wonderful display of Rhododendrons and Azaleas. I have also noticed in the previous years, rhododendrons bloom much earlier than the official Rhododendron Festival date. Start with a coffee in one of Blackheath's fabulous cafes. Visit

Private property access has been arranged. Park at GR 790 997 on Long Ridge Trail and descend into a gully to the east. Leave the gully at around GR 797 998 and traverse counter clockwise to a spectacular Long Ridge Point. Next, climb out to the tip of Long Ridge East and then walk back to the vehicles. About 6 km. Park near Airly Mountain and walk up to the plateau. Walk down Genowlan Mountain Trail to about GR 255 329 and find a way up a north-south running defile. Check the pagodas around GR 255 332 and to the south of there. From here, check the ravine and slots to the north west, then walk out on the spur to the south at GR 2525 3300. River views. Mostly on well formed paths through reserves and quiet streets. Steps, ups and downs, some unformed and unsealed tracks which could be muddy and slippery following rain. An out and back walk from Kings Tableland Rd to Lions Head before descending to the floor of Kedumba Valley via Lions Pass. We will visit the refurbished Kedumba Farm slab hut before inspecting the ruins and lunching at Kedumba Campground in the lee of Mt. Solitary. We then retrace our steps back to the cars. There is a change in altitude of 500m on this walk but you only really notice the 150m descent and ascent of Lions Pass. Should be still plenty of flowers around and of course the views are to die for. Joint walk with Upper Blue Mtns Bush Club. Walk may be cancelled at short notice if weather is unfavourable. Cars are needed to get to the start of the walk. Contact leader if you need transport. Walkers should be adept with gully scrambling which will be required in the Pass. Gaiters recommended. While this walk is not “Strictly for the Birds”, they do play a major part in it. Between Town Hall and Circular Quay the walk passes some beautiful sculptures of birds (Terrance Plowright's "Dancing Brolgas", Michael Thomas's Hill's "Forgotten Songs", Tracey Emin's " The Distance of your Heart” and Stephen Walker's “Tank Stream” fountains). After a ferry ride the walk then continues on Cockatoo Island where the seagulls are raising their chicks. Live pigeons, ibis and seagulls included! Hazards: city traffic, steps, seagulls. (Updated Details) The walk starts at junction of Old Northern Road and Excelsior Avenue , Castle Hill. The route is then through Bigigal reserve and follows Darling Mills Creek to Lake Parramatta, Parramatta Park to Parramatta CBD.
Walkers can chose to leave the group at North Rocks Road before entering Lake Parramatta Reserve or at Windsor Road soon after leaving Lake Parramatta.
Historic buildings and the Light Rail constuction will be seen before continuing to Parramatta.
There is much history here, including Old Governmen House and the site of first wheat field in Australia.
Walkers may choose to visit the Catholic Church - rebuilt after a fire and the adjoining new build. The track down Excelsior Creek,Darling Mills Creek and around Lake Parramatta is quite rough in places with trip hazzards. There are two creek crossings( there is an alternate short bypass to avoid these crossings}.
There are a number of busy roads to cross. This walk is not possible after rain and if necessary will be rescheduled. Location: Castle and Baulkham Hills Limit: 24. View |
