(Fully Booked) We have an opportunity to explore some of the best of the North Shore of Sydney Harbour.
Starting at Balmoral Beach with its little jetty and huge fig trees; to Middle Head to explore fortifications and cliff top views beyond the Heads; then through angophora trees to Georges Heights and barracks converted to artist studios; and on to Clifton Gardens for lunch. Then we will walk beside secluded bays to the navy memorials at Bradley’s Head. Then it is a short walk to Taronga Zoo for a Ferry to Circular Quay and trains home.
It all starts by boarding the first carriage of the SHL train at 7.14 am in Bowral and arriving in Wynyard at 9.45 then a bus or taxis to Balmoral beach. After coffee we shall start our walk at about 10:30 am.
The walk is about 11kms. It takes about 4 hours and 45 mins including lunch and many stops along the way ( but not for cafes or a swim ). See what Arthur Streeton saw when he did some of his finest work.
- See the lizards, lorikeets, wrens and bush turkeys.
- Listen to the currawongs. Hear the waves, lapping at the shore.
- Enter the fortifications where microbats now live.
We aim to arrive at Taronga Zoo in time for connections to SHL train departing Central at 4pm.

Find out why this part of the Gardens of Stone must be better protected for the future generations.
Park the vehicles at around GR 306 175 on the branch road off the Bicentennial National Trail. Follow the Great Dividing Range north to Gordian Knot and then to Witches Watch, a spectacular lookout above Hecates Cauldron. From here, descend into the Cauldron and explore it underneath the cliff lines and also above, amidst “the bubbles”. Visit the Tower of Hope and other features. Descend into the headwaters of Baal Bone Creek, cross the valley and climb up through Tara Slot onto Tara Point. More amazing views. From here, move up to the ridge and re-connect with the vehicles. Folk opting for the easier version will just do the usual ascent of Pigeon House, return to carpark, then drive to Yadboro camping area on the Clyde River for afternoon tea. The more adventurous will ascend Pigeon House by usual route for morning tea on summit. On descent leave usual track and go north to Wombat Ridge firetrail, then west down Longfella Pass, very steep rough descent on firetrails to reach Yadboro. A well-deserved afternoon billy tea with the other walkers to finish the day. Then hitch a ride with them back to Pigeon House carpark. Grade 3 or 4: Medium or Medium/Hard. (Fully Booked) We are repeating the Heritage Festival 2022 walking tour of Cooks River by Terry Lennis, a proud D'harawal man, local elder and Aboriginal horticulturalist. The recent history of this area is well documented, but this is an opportunity to hear the Indigenous perspective on the history and current uses of the rivers and waterways. Terry Lennis is one of the knowledge holders for the Midjuburi Ward and he will take you on a bush tucker foraging journey along one of the Inner West's special waterways. A scenic and relaxed pace ride on cycle paths and cycle routes around the foreshore. Passing through historical properties, then cross over on the punt. Return to the start over John Whitton Bridge. There are train stations along the way if you prefer a shorter ride or getting tired. Unfortunately, riding an e-bike on this trip will mean that you are not covered under NPA club insurance; Bushwalking Australia is working to see if it can be covered for future trips. This canyon is relatively dry (no swims) and reminds me of Wolgan view canyon in parts. It has some truly spectacular sections including the aptly named Acoustic Chamber which is an enormous overhang of sorts with wonderful aural properties! Expect off-track walking with lots of rock scrambling and an adventurous time as we explore and enjoy this special place. Rock scrambling and off-track walking. The walk starts on D’Arcy Trail at GR 744 018. Walk north on the ridge to about GR 748 032 and descend under cliffs, then traverse to GR 746 037. Follow the gully down to Blacksmiths Creek. Continue downstream to GR 757 038 or GR 761 036, if time allows. Climb back on the ridge and walk back to the start. Partly exploratory. About 10 km. Scrambling and exposure. We will mostly follow the edge of the lake observing bird life and taking a short diversion along a creek as well as stopping on the island then paddling across to Medlyn Avenue.
