This is a great walk on tracks that themselves have been declared "World Heritage", because of their convict origins. We walk up Devines Hill on the well preserved Old Great North Road and then return via Finches Line, with its spectacular views over the Hawkesbury River and Wisemans Ferry. Though a solid climb, it is quite pleasant with the current cooler temperatures. Leader will arrange car-pooling. It is essential to book giving your NPA, mobile emergency contact numbers and whether you are driving or a passenger, please. There are roadworks on the road at the bottom due to landslides and slumping. The descent on Finches line is fairly steep and rough. Some road walking. Walking from Fortress Ridge Track car parking area on Mt Hay Road. Taking in views at Fortress Ridge Rock Lookout, then down the track to Dr Darkes Cave for morning tea. Going past the cave to the cliff side lookout before returning back to the cave. Turn off the track to the cave for a short off-track section to Fortress Ridge Track.
Continue on this track and taking the side track down to Fortress Creek. Return back to Fortress Ridge Track. Lunch spot somewhere with views from the Fortress Ridge track. Return to cars at Mt Hay Road along track. Hazards include slippery rocks and loose rocks. Off-track section is 400m with 100m elevation gain and is where loose rocks will be encountered. Every year Bush Search and Rescue NSW (BSAR) organises and runs the Australian Emergency Services Wilderness Navigation Shield or NavShield. Participants test their bush and compass navigation abilities in an overnight event through 100 square km of wilderness terrain a few hours drive from Sydney, Australia. This remote area first aid course is specifically designed to meet the first aid needs of bushwalkers, wilderness guides, and people who work or live in remote locations. The course covers everything from comprehensive first aid treatments to aeromedical evacuation, long-term care, self-care, and contingency planning. This course is focused on the safety of the first aider and extended care of an ill or injured casualty where help is likely to be delayed or inaccessible.
