As you may be aware, on 21 December 2019 the entire Wolgan Valley, including Newnes, was burnt in a catastrophic fire event. We helped Thomas to lay 2.5 km of pipe to restore his water supply.
Unfortunately, Newnes was flooded on 17 February, with water and debris blocking all drains, so the place is a mess.
What needs to be done: Thomas would like help to clean up the debris and ash water has dumped.
Skills required: no special skills required.
Tools to bring: Rakes, mattocks.
Note these is not a club activity. Everyone volunteers on their own accord. Please let Yuri Bolotin know at 0413 715 943, yuri@bigci.org if you would like to join him, and he will get back to you with the logistics. Limit: 10.

A biodiversity offset property with a beautiful rainforest. The land was being restored by the owner over many years but suffered major damage during the bushfires.
What needs to be done: Chainsawing, cutting branches, clearing pathways etc
Skills required: Need a couple of people with chainsaws who know how to use them.
Tools to bring: See above re chainsaws; plus secateurs and rakes, although there are some on the property.
Group limit: We have people for light duties already. As this is a smaller property, need 2-3 people for chainsawing/branch cutting, so people with chainsaws will be given first priority.
Note these is not a club activity. Everyone volunteers on their own accord. Please let Yuri Bolotin know at 0413 715 943, yuri@bigci.org if you would like to join him, and he will get back to you with the logistics.

Saving Cliefden Caves and Fossil Hill from Submergence |
|
|
|
|
Branch |
General Community Event |
For more than 80 years there have been proposals to flood the valley at the Needles Gap, to store water as security in times of drought and to mitigate flooding occasionally affecting Canowindra. But these proposals would also submerge many of the caves and prevent access to the important fossil sites, as well as flooding valuable agricultural land.
So how do requirements for water storage and other uses stack up against preserving natural heritage? Dr Ian Percival will address some of the issues involved in the campaign by cavers and geologists to protect Cliefden Caves and Fossil Hill. This campaign was successful in dissuading the Government from constructing the dam, but not everyone was happy, especially local farmers. Step Inc event.

The 1813 crossing of the Blue Mountains was the expedition led by Gregory Blaxland, William Lawson and William Charles Wentworth, which became the first successful crossing of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales by European settlers. Mal January did not exactly follow the original route but mapped out his hiking route and led a group to cross the Blue Mountains twice. Thanks to his generosity for permitting me to use his route, we can repeat this epic journey to cross the Blue Mountains. We are walking in reverse direction so as to take advantage of the cooler climate in upper Blue Mountains in the summer months. Autumn colours will be beautiful. We take the 8:24 Blue Mountains train every Sunday, with some exceptions. A certificate of completion will be awarded to walkers who complete all the 15 sections. If there are certain sections that you are not available, let me know. You may be able to pair up with another person to complete them on different dates.
