25 Feb, Tue 7:30PM Saving Cliefden Caves and Fossil Hill from Submergence
Branch
General Community Event
Talk | A talk or slide show presentation. For more than 80 years there have been proposals to flood the valley at the Needles Gap, to store water as security in times of drought and to mitigate flooding occasionally affecting Canowindra. But these proposals would also submerge many of the caves and prevent access to the important fossil sites, as well as flooding valuable agricultural land. So how do requirements for water storage and other uses stack up against preserving natural heritage? Dr Ian Percival will address some of the issues involved in the campaign by cavers and geologists to protect Cliefden Caves and Fossil Hill. This campaign was successful in dissuading the Government from constructing the dam, but not everyone was happy, especially local farmers. Step Inc event. View

Walk | A bushwalk of any kind short or longPublic Transport | There are public transport options to and from this activity.The 1813 crossing of the Blue Mountains was the expedition led by Gregory BlaxlandWilliam Lawson and William Charles Wentworth, which became the first successful crossing of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales by European settlers.  Mal January did not exactly follow the original route but mapped out his hiking route and led a group to cross the Blue Mountains twice.  Thanks to his generosity for permitting me to use his route, we can repeat this epic journey to cross the Blue Mountains. We are walking in reverse direction so as to take advantage of the cooler climate in upper Blue Mountains in the summer months. Autumn colours will be beautiful. We take the 8:24 Blue Mountains train every Sunday, with some exceptions. A certificate of completion will be awarded to walkers who complete all the 15 sections. If there are certain sections that you are not available, let me know. You may be able to pair up with another person to complete them on different dates. Pink Flaannel flowers seeds  need a fire and rain to germinate. We had both. Let’s see if we can find some. Steep and slippery sections.

Paddle | A canoe or kayak tripA whole lot of rubbish came tumbling down the hills around the lagoon during the recent storms, so we’re taking to our kayaks with bags, racks and gloves on the hunt for those pesky bottles, coffee cups, plastic bags and other bits and bobs. With the support of Northern Beaches Council, we’ll be focusing on the shoreline between the picnic areas, which are difficult for land-based crews to access. Join our happy group at 9am on Clean Up Australia Day for a 2-hour session as we work our way around the waterway. Everything provided. No charge for kayak hire for the first 10 to sign up - $25 per person thereafter. You’ll get to experience more of the lagoon as we go and get some nice, gentle exercise, too. You must register in advance. Just send an email to Tony Carr, the former president of Friends of Narrabeen Lagoon Catchment, who will lead the session. Life jackets will be provided and must be worn while on the water. View
