Join me on one or more walks of this challenge of the 3Ps through winter, enjoying Blue Gum Forest from Lockley Pylon, Pierces Pass, and Perrys Lookdown.
With some of the best views across the Grose valley, the first of our 3P challenge is an invigorating and rewarding walk. We will follow the Lockley Pylon walking track, through low lying heath to Lockley Pylon with magnificent views. Continuing to Du Faurs to descend into the valley on the steep and rocky terrain of Shortridge pass. We'll cross Govetts Creek into Blue Gum Forest for lunch before we commence the ascent and scramble back up Du Faurs on our return trip. Banksias are blooming and the wattle is about to pop. Lots to enjoy on this iconic walk. Joint walk with the Bushclub. Steep and rocky terrain, mild exposure, short scramble up the cliff line, relatively easy creek crossing. Starting at Manly Wharf, it heads up and over to Little Manly Beach then crosses the ridge to Fairy Bower Beach via St Patricks College. After a long flat stretch along Manly and Steyne beaches it climbs from the Queenscliff rock pool towards Freshwater before descending to Manly Creek. We will visit the imposing Lawrence Hargrave monument, view remnants of a coal mine and see the sculptures acknowledging the local Aboriginal Wodi Wodi people, account of the 5 islands formation. Potential side trip to Robertsons Lookout (adds 2 kms) and late lunch in the Botanical Gardens, time dependant. Two early climbs, 210m and 180m. This is one of the Jim series of walks. The original inhabitants of the Canoelands area were the Darug people. The Darug were the custodians of the majority of what is now the Greater Sydney region. They were divided into a number of different 'clans', whose quick demise upon European settlement has sadly resulted in very little information remaining on how they utilised the local area. The second of the 3P challenge is more gentle then the first, and offers views across the northern end of the Gross Valley. Starting at Pierces pass, we follow the walking track through dense vegetation past Fairy Grotto, continuing down until we reach the river crossing. From here it’s a fairly open track beside the gorgeous Grose river to Blue Gum Forest. Return via the same route. Mountain Devils are flowering and the bush on this descent is simply delightful. This is a great walk on tracks that themselves have been declared "World Heritage", because of their convict origins. We walk up Devines Hill on the well preserved Old Great North Road and then return via Finches Line, with its spectacular views over the Hawkesbury River and Wisemans Ferry. Though a solid climb, it is quite pleasant with the current cooler temperatures. Leader will arrange car-pooling. It is essential to book giving your NPA, mobile emergency contact numbers and whether you are driving or a passenger, please. There are roadworks on the road at the bottom due to landslides and slumping. The descent on Finches line is fairly steep and rough. Some road walking.
