(Fully Booked - Ask leader about waiting list) Botany: Sir Joseph Banks Park and Foreshore Park. This is a short summer walk. A large park and wetland located adjacent to the former Sir Joseph Banks Hotel at 23 Anniversary Street Botany; and originally part of its curtilage. The park was created in 1988 as Botany Bay Council’s major Bicentennial project as an interpretative reconstruction of the Hotel’s famous ‘pleasure gardens’ and a new parkland area of wetlands and lakes formed by the spoil of the reclamation works associated with the expansion of Port Botany. The restoration was designed by landscape architect Bruce Mackenzie using original documentation of the grounds, including maps, illustrations and descriptions, and includes a reconstructed oval, running track, wetlands (including ponds), picnic facilities and a contemporary interpretation of the original zoo, as a playground space with life-sized animal sculptures including bears, tigers, elephants , camels and gorillas; which was sponsored by local manufacturer Kellogs and sculpted by William Rees, a Perth animal portraitist. The park also features other sculptural animals including topiary frames of groups of elephants in the regenerated bushland on the western side of the oval; and thematic gardens, a maze, pergolas, terraces and arbours. The main sculptural feature, apart from the animals, is of Sir Joseph Banks in a pose of heroic discovery. The reclaimed area includes lakes, wetlands and two large picnic/BBQ facilities. https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/heritageapp/ViewHeritageItemDetails.aspx?ID=1210025 View Esther's future walks Social distancing, mask, sanitizer. (Nearly fully booked) Co-leader Elena Mazur: EGYPTIAN HIEROGLYPHICS. Did the Egyptians discover Australia before Captain Cook? You can make up your own minds about the hieroglyphics.
It’s a loop walk. A little climb up a hill then squeeze through a small opening, will find you in a crevice adorned with the hieroglyphs. From there, we can retrace our steps for a short distance, then walk the Koolewong Fire trail for a further kilometre or so before crossing the creek and having lunch at the waterfall. After lunch, we'll visit the Aboriginal Carvings. View Esther's future walks A bit of scrambling to get to the hieroglyphs. Chance of getting wet feet. The waterfall is sometimes quite slippery and may have to do a little rock hopping. Map: Kariong Limit: 10. View |

(Nearly fully booked) Martin Place, Strand Arcade, Pitt Street Mall and some others will still have the Xmas lights on until the end of the year. Of special interest is Strand Arcade. It is inspired by native flowers. How about we avoid the pre-Christmas rush and go after Xmas? I'm planning to see the Movie Nomadland at 4pm Dendy, Newtown. Then have dinner before going to see the lights. Dendy is very close to a historic cemetery. Meet at Dendy at 3 pm if you wish to visit the cemetery before movie. Location: City of Sydney Limit: 10.
