Bar Point is an isolated riverside settlement on the Hawkesbury River in Popran National Park. The proposed route of the Great River Walk runs through this settlement. The route options have never been fully explored due to the remoteness of the area. So this walk is designed to fill in the gaps in our knowledge and explore the area, particularly a possible link between Bar Point and Big Jim Point. It will be an adventure. Save Kosci walk: day 17. At 18.8km a shorter day, with the highlight being a catered afternon tea at historic Merigan Homestead. We vary 3km from the most direct route, in order to avoid extended narrow verges on the Tarago-Bungendore Rd. Instead the route follows the Braidwood Road for 8.4km (less busy than the Kings Hwy and better verges), then takes the quieter Mt Fairy Road, initially sealed but later gravel, for a 7.6km wander though a varied rural landscape with pleasant views. Arriving at Merigan Homestead, around 2:30pm, we meet a bunch of local walkers for afternoon tea & a short talk on the station’s history by the owner Tim de Mestre. Then join the local walkers for 2.7km on farm road through an avenue of deciduous trees to the Merigan boundary, with a good viewpoint on the way. Return the 2.7km to the homestead in the support car(s). Overnight at the homestead, either very comfortable accommodation in the renovated ‘Maids quarters’ indoors, or camping. Dinner is roast local lamb and salads at $15.50 a head. For more info and to register go to https://savekosci.org/
