Projecting itself out from the cliff into the void above Carne creek caves is the aptly named Flying Carpet! This narrowish slab of rock affords the cautious walker outstanding views of the surrounding clifflines all around and far down into Carne creek. We will also visit the wonderful Koan cave too as we progress along the towering escarpment. Morong creek with its series of spectacular falls and cascades is one of the gems of the Kanangra Boyd national park and on this walk we will follow its downward path as its plummets down to the picturesque Kowmung River. On the way we will savour its beauty, go for a swim and do the same when we reach the river at the bottom. This is really wild country and with its pink and grey granite boulders, the Morong creek is truly an amazing place for those with an adventurous spirit. For participating hikers, I'd advise to stay in Oberon the night before as the drive to the start of the walk is much shorter. rock scrambling and offtrack Location: Kanangra-Boyd NP Map: Shooters Hill 88302S Limit: 12.

(Fully Booked - Ask leader about waiting list) When the heat of Summer is upon us, where do we go to escape the heat? The Colo River Gorge of course!
On this particular walk we will experience the outstanding beauty of what is essentially the lifeline and heart of the Wollemi wilderness, the stunning Colo River and in particular the section between Tootie Creek and Meroo campsite. Expect long sandbanks, clear, tranquil pools, the exquisite Tootie cascades and lots of peace and quiet with only birdsong and the rivers gentle sounds to keep you company, as well as you're hiking friends of course.
I plan to take a flotation device and float along past the scrubby bits and suggest everyone does the same offtrack walking along the Colo river with scrambling at times. Location: Wollemi NP Map: Mountain Lagoon 90313S Limit: 12.

Many people have done Wollangambe 1 and 2 canyon sections, but have you ventured further down this magnificent watercourse because there are some superb sections of canyon to experience for the adventurous walker/canyoner. Included is a tunnel section, oodles of long and spectacular pools, cascades and rock formations and a strong possibility you'll have the whole place to yourself. Helmets, wetsuits, surfmats or lilos/donuts are essential and a PFD too if you aren't a good swimmer. Needless to say a canyon pack or drybag are also important to bring along as is a sense of adventure and fun. rock scrambling and rapids Location: Wollemi NP Map: Wollangambe 89312S Limit: 12.

Hobnail Canyon |
Grade:4/6 |
Length |
7km |
150m |

Hobnail Canyon is situated on Range creek and offers the enthusiastic canyoner a wonderful and spectacular exploration along a beautiful watercourse which doesn't include any abseils although there are a few short tape sections to negotiate into and out of the canyon, especially at the exit track on South Bowen creek.
Anyone attending needs to bring a helmet/wetsuit/drybag and PFD if you are not a proficient swimmer but you don't need a surfmat or donut as the swims are very short. This is a canyon well away from the insta crowd and one definitely worth doing. rock scrambling and offtrack Location: Wollemi NP Map: Mount Wilson 8930-1N Limit: 12.

The Bob Turners track is probably the easiest route down to the mighty Colo River and where it meets this superb watercourse is an enormous pool which is perfect for a swim on a hot Summers day. But wait theres more! Bring along you're flotation device such as a surfmat or donut and we will float down the river, shoot the odd cascade before we return and eventually climb back up the way we came. Rocky creek canyon |
Grade:5/6 |
Length |
6km |
250m |
Sydney Branch |
Mark G. |
Rocky creek canyon is the classic canyon and is regarded as an entry level wet canyon as it does not have any abseils but does have several short swims with the longest being about 30 metres. The scenery in this canyon is unparalleled as its sculptured walls are regarded as the best you'll find anywhere. On this trip I plan to do the full length and climb up the exit track which means we won't have to double back and climb up the cascades. Participants should have the following gear, helmet, wetsuit, drybag, PFD if you are not a proficient swimmer. I have rated this a 5 because there are some tricky scrambles down cascades to negotiate and a rocky climb out at the end. rock scrambling and slippery conditions Location: Wollemi NP Map: Rock Hill 89312N Limit: 12.

Corkscrew canyon is in the upper section of South Bowen creek drainage system and is a relatively easyish canyon to do as it does not involved any abseils or long swims but rewards the curious hiker with stunning constricted passages, sculptured clifflines, gorgeous cascades and pools and the chance to see an area not all that often visited. Helmet, wetsuit, drybag and a PFD required for those who aren't competent swimmers. rock scrambling and offtrack Location: Wollemi NP Map: Mt Wilson Limit: 12.
