Walks will be in the RNP near the headwaters of the Hacking River which drains off the Illawarra escarpment.
The infamous Peabody Metropolitan Colliery is located further up Camp Gully Creek. The mine has illegally discharged coal waste material into these waterways on numerous occasions in recent years. If you’re curious about the ongoing impacts on the ecosystem downstream, this is a good opportunity to see the evidence for yourself.

Park the vehicles at Airly Gap. Walk south west following the alignment of the former tramway to the transfer station site and the double track skip haulage to the high level tunnel through the south west end of Mount Airly. Climb the incredible pagoda spur to the top of the south west corner of Mount Airly, then traverse eastwards on the top/southern edge of the mountain, full of spectacular cliffs, overhangs and caves. This walk will be jointly led by Les Heitter. We will meet on Pittwater Rd, Narrabeen, just past the “Tramshed Café” (see old Sydney tram parked outside). We start the walk by crossing Pittwater Rd to go to Narrabeen Beach, heading north along Narrabeen Peninsula, and crossing over Narrabeen Lagoon where it empties into the ocean. We then return to the main lagoon to start our circuit walk. The lagoon is home to many seabirds, black swans and even aggressive Kookaburras (especially at the picnic spots). The walk will take us past the Sydney Academy of Sport, Cromer Golf Course, Jamieson Park and many beautiful lakeside spots as we near our starting point. (Fully Booked) The walk begins at Meryla Pass in Morton NP. From the locked gate continue on the Fire Trail along the ridge. The first section is a fairly steep fire trail but flattens out and then follows along a track.There are several viewpoints which look towards Mt Carrialoo, Crankey's Creek and Lake Yarrunga until reaching the end of the track overlooking Wombat Hill. If conditions are suitable we push through on a less defined track to Yarrunga Trig for great views down to the jnct of Yarrunga Creek & Kangaroo R. On the return there is an optional trail leading to Rebecca's View over Sandy's Creek on the other side of the ridge. Rough track and unfenced cliffs. Off track for extension to the trig. We will get excellent views over the sea, where we will hopefully spot some whales, as this is peak whale watching season. On the Malabar side, we will be passing by the bay that featured in the 2022 ABC TV drama "Significant Others".
