Walk north east, initially on the old firetrail to spot heights 1004 and 1002. Turn north, then east and make our way to the cliff edge at about GR 397 160. From here, commence exploration of this dissected terrain going south. There is much to see and do before we reach the point GR 410 144 above the Flying Carpet. This is likely to be two walks. About 8 km. Exploratory. Scrambling and exposure.

We will also follow the 40 Foot Track down to the river on the return leg and then back over Mt Alexandra to the finish. Track steep in places.

Glenbrook Tunnel, Lennox Bridge The Gatekeepers Cottage, John Whitton Memorial and The Great River Walk are the highlights of the walk. The disused Glenbrook Tunnel is steeped in history. It was used as a secret site for mustard gas storage in World War II and in recent years housed a mushroom farm that one local MP called a "doss house". The Lennox Bridge is a heritage-listed road bridge at Mitchells Pass. It is the oldest stone arch bridge on the Australian mainland. Check this out. Steep and slippery sections. No-touch sign-on. Steep but interesting climb up from Sand Hole. Walking beside Glenbrook Creek is rough going at times.

Hazards: Rough track, fallen trees and unfenced cliffs.

Walk north north west, then west to GR 323 070, near spot height 1066. Continue underneath the cliff line and explore the multiple ravines of Kangaroo Creek, going south, until about GR 330 062. Re-connect with the vehicles. About 8 km. Partly exploratory. Scrambling and exposure.

This is a great walk and not that difficult although it does entail some scrambling, mainly off-track walking, but certainly worth it. Rock scrambling.

Over the course of the walk you will come across
  • The pristine bushland of Sydney Harbour National Park
  • An abundance of spectacular views of the harbour
  • An old Naval Base
  • Tiny harbour beaches where you can take a swim
  • A nude beach
  • Several cafes and restaurants at Chowder Bay
  • The Sydney Harbour Marine Institute where you can learn more about the Harbour
If the tide is low when we finish at Balmoral, we may extend to The Spit along the waterfront. In that case, the walk will be 17 km. Limit: 12. View
