A six night full pack walk involving Daveys Hut, Kidmans Hut, and Mawsons Hut. Exact details will be determined by weather and other factors. We camp near these huts but not in them so everyone needs to be fully equipped for the variety of conditions in the area. We stay at ski lodge in Jindabyne for a night on either side of the walk with our regular BBQ overlooking the lake. Leader: Lynne Hewitt. Join us for a tour to this idyllic island just a hop, skip and a jump from Hawkesbury River Station, Brooklyn. Upon arrival on this car-free oasis of bush, beach and tranquillity, we will be welcomed by tree-lined palms and jacarandas. On the lower grounds we'll walk past the Bowling Club and Bradleys Beach. On the higher grounds we'll get great views of the Hawkesbury River. We'll also walk past a Blackbutt – Rough-barked Apple Forest. Enjoy the scenic train ride across the Hawkesbury River and a joy ferry ride to the island. Enjoy lunch or Devonshire tea at Dangar Island Depot before taking the ferry back home. Covering the north, mid and southern sections of this beautiful section of coast with sublime views, we will start at the sparkling Minnamurra River, passing Cathedral rocks, then onto Bombo Headland for views over the quarry. Making our way through Kiama’s pristine beaches we will visit both blowholes then head over the rolling green hills on our way to Gerringong. A steep climb up Mt Durras, then walk across to Clear Point and stop for lunch. On the way back, explore the new track along the coast to Pretty. Some up and down hills, along rock platforms, up and down constructed steps. The walk is long, but pace will be steady, with plenty of time to enjoy the coast on the way back, including swims. Admire the water birds, sculptures and the flora...Maples, tea trees, grevillea ( specific to this area), isopogan, sun Orchid, wild strawberries, tree ferns, and of course Waratahs and rhododendrons flowering in October. There are more species unknown to the leader. Botanists are invited to join the walk to enrich our knowledge. If you are lucky, you will see redbellied snakes. Park at Airly Mountain or on the plateau at GR 250 324. Walk to the top part of The Grotto, then north to the bottom end of Ladders Defile. After a quick visit, explore the highly dissected terrain of pagodas, slots and spurs to the east, bounded by Genowlan Creek gorge. Return via Lyrebird Defile. Scrambling and exposure. About 6km. We then proceed southwesterly on rough tracks to Paradise Rock for lunch with a view, then a short but rough, steep and scrubby off-track section should land us on Steamers Beach for a snack and maybe another swim.
