19th Century naturalists were fascinated with the richness and beauty of Australian butterflies. Joseph Banks' collection of Australian butterflies remain an important record of Lepidoptera. By the early 19th century, butterfly collecting was regarded as an educated hobby, with many women artists given the task to scientifically illustrate these beautiful insects. Butterflies are a powerful reminder of the beauty and fragility of the natural world, particularly with threats from chemicals, land clearing and climate change.

General Community Event |
Save Kosci walk: day 6. A 25 km day. Starts with a winding route to Thirlmere for morning tea at a café (or nearby park). Then the route dodges the busy Wilson Drive by using quieter roads and tracks which run parallel to it. The scenery is mainly rural properties, villages, and natural bush. Much of the walking terrain is mown footpath or tree-lined gravel road. The day finishes with a scenic 1.5 km walk along disused railway line through the dramatic Big Hill Cutting, built around 1863. Support cars will then ferry the walkers on a 15 minute drive to a bush camp site in Nattai NP. For more info and to register go to https://savekosci.org/

General Community Event |
Save Kosci: day 7. A 17km day, mostly downhill or flat. Walking to Hill Top village on the dis-used railway line, to avoid the narrow verges and cuttings of Wilson Drive. Then some quiet side roads, a bit of busier road. In Colo Vale we start to encounter the wide, mown verges that are a feature of the garden-proud Southern Highlands. The fringes of Mittagong provide another good opportunity to drop hand-outs in letterboxes. Allow 5 to 6 hours walking time. Suggested accommodation – Melrose and Mittagong Motels. Save Kosci walk: day 8. 20km, with a climb of 300 metres in the morning then mostly downhill or flat. Highlights include walking the shady tourist road through the Mt Gibraltar Reserve in the morning, with morning tea at Bowral Lookout. The route also provides an introduction to some of the wealthier suburbs of the Southern Highlands, where mansions are set in manicured gardens, and verges have been mown for us by the staff. Through the main streets of Bowral and Moss Vale for some publicity for the cause, and nearly 5km of path through fields for some tranquility for the soul.
