3-5 Mar, Sun-Tue Pilliga Coal Seam Gas Tour
Armidale Branch
Pat S.
Accommodation | An activity that involves an overnight stay, using hard-roofed accommodation such as a cabin, hut or hotel.Camp | An activity that involves an overnight stay, usually in a tent.Walk | A bushwalk of any kind short or longWould you like to learn more about the coal seam gas exploration in The Pilliga, between Coonabarabran and Narrabri? Santos is operating on an exploration licence with 53 exploratory coal seam gas wells, mostly on public land in Pilliga East State Forest. Armidale Branch of NPA gathered community support in the past to stop destruction of The Pilliga for industrial charcoal, and again to have large parts reserved as National Park and Conservation Areas. We plan to visit some of the beautiful areas, as well as areas being damaged by coal seam gas mining and its infrastructure. Tentative Itinerary (this will change depending on the time participants have available) Day 1: Meet at Pilliga Bore Baths - camp at the bore baths ($5 night) or stay at Pilliga Pub (2 family rooms available, budget accommodation). Relax in the warm artesian pool. Dinner at Pilliga Café (about $25) or self-cater.
Day 2: Leave 9am. Visit the Forest Discovery Centre, Baradine; Sculptures in the Scrub at Dandry Gorge; the Sandstone Caves. Stay at Pilliga Pottery. Accommodation: bed in shared room $30/person/night, or camp $10. Pat will book for the whole group. Woodfired Pizza dinner (about $20) or self-cater. Blue Wren Café offers alcohol, cappuccinos, meals, snacks.
Day 3: Self-cater breakfast (the Blue Wren Cafe breakfast is served too late). Purchase packed lunch $10-12 or self-cater lunch. Leave Pilliga Pottery 8:30am. An activist may lead the tour. Visit the coal seam gas wells; Bibblewindi plant; see how much forest gets cleared for each well; visit rehabilitated evaporation pond and well sites; see the forest fragmentation caused by pipelines and roads; see forest areas where more wells are planned; view Leewood plant from the gate. We may drive to Wando near Leard Forest for views of the mines in Leard Forest if time permits. Return to Armidale or head home.
Join just for a day or the whole trip. For more information or to register contact Pat. Carry drinking water, fill up with fuel in Narrabri before starting the tour, and passing through Narrabri ending the tour. I use almost a full tank of fuel on the tour in a Subaru Forester, there is no fuel available for long distances in The Pilliga. It is more convenient to self-cater breakfast and lunch and snacks each day. Car sharing and rail travel can be organised. View
