Morong creek with its series of spectacular cascades and falls is one of the gems of the Kanangra Boyd National Park and on this walk we will follow its downward path as it plummets down to the Kowmung river. If its going to be a hot day we may not go all the way down to the Kowmung river but swim in the many pools created by the creek. (Postponed) If you are relatively new to canyoning and you want a really fun one to do which doesn't involve abseiling then Dargans Canyon is hard to beat! There are a few shortish swims and some scrambling down short sections of tape which are fairly easy and then there's the exit! This involves a scramble up a tree with spikes which sounds difficult but really isn't! Of course I'll set up a safety line before we climb the tree. Mermaids pool and Tahmoor gorge is a delightful circuit walk that takes you past numerous cascades and swimming holes where you can escape the heat of late Summer. On the last two occasions I did this walk it rained so we couldn't complete the entire walk through the most spectacular part of the gorge. Projecting itself out of the cliff into the void above Carne creek is the aptly named Flying Carpet. This narrowish slab of rock affords the cautious walker outstanding views of the surrounding cliff lines all around and far down into Carne creek. The Broad Swamp to Birds Rock walking track is part of the 30kms plus Gardens of Stone great walk and is the last section of this track to be finished so of course I am keen to experience it. The track passes through various vegetation types and includes some spectacular viewpoints along the way including a show stopper lookout into Carne creek. This walk is all on tracks but I may go offtrack for a short distance to climb the odd pagoda which would be optional of course. Location: Gardens of Stone SCA Map: Cullen Bullen 89313N Limit: 20. A walk with history and lots of pagodas and stunning views! We start our hike along the Tramway trail, passing various old miners dwellings now being overtaken by nature and head west until the trail ends and we then follow the ridge along to Blacks Corner. Sounds deceptively simple but along the way we will encounter more pagodas and slots than you can imagine as well as some almost parkland sections of grassy lomandra until we reach our objective, Blacks Corner. What this walk lacks in distance it more than makes up for in terms of variety and pure enjoyment as there is much to see and savour in this not often visited part of Wollemi national park. Along the way you'll encounter some of the best and largest swimming holes you could hope to find, gorgeous waterfalls and cascades and stands of towering trees in a rainforest environment. Add to these features, some extraordinary tafoni enriched sandstone caves, rock wells to play in and a hellva lot more. This walk takes in a lot of wild country in the upper reaches of Govetts Leap Creek and a short section of Katoomba Creek and involves a fair bit of creek walking and offtrack walking along with some tracks thrown in for good measure! All in all you can expect a lot of variety and almost certainly few people! So if you are in the mood for a walk not listed in any guide book then this is for you! My wife and I will be heading over to Africa for our 7th safari and this time we are travelling from Kenya in Tanzania for 13 days staying in excellent accommodation including lodges and glamping tents whilst searching for wildlife.
