  FOKE (Friends of Ku-ring-gai Environment) Event. This fundraising luncheon for EDO, NSW opens with the question about whether it might be time to consider world heritage listing Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park - the second national park in NSW in 1894, and one of the first in the world.
Madi Maclean, President of the Blue Mountains Conservation Society will highlight the achievement of World Heritage Listing the Greater Blue Mountains in 2000. Bob Crombie from the Sutherland Shire Environment Centre will talk about their current campaign calling to World Heritage list Royal National Park. When Royal was reserved in 1879 it was the first time the words ‘national park’ had ever been used to describe a protected park area. When Yellowstone was formed in the USA in 1872 it was named a national park in the sense that the park was under federal, not State, jurisdiction.
In 2017 the English Lake District’s World Heritage status was changed to include the role it played in the development of the conservation movement. This new initiative now opens the door for Royal National Park to be world heritage listed. If this is achieved, then it is timely to call for Ku-ring-gai Chase be World Heritage listed as well. After all Ku-ring-gai was one of the first parks to be formed because of the intrinsic values of nature. Eccleston Du Faur (1832-1915) the driving force behind the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park had no doubts about this when he used these words for the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park seal - Natura Ars Dei or ‘Nature is the Art of God’.
