History: |
Formed 16 Feb 1957 as the Central Region, one of two founding ‘Regions’ of NPA NSW; reconstituted as Sydney Branch 9 Feb 1976. Early figures included Allen Strom (1915-1997), Tom Moppett (1912-2000), Myles Dunphy (1891-1985), Allan Fox (1931-2013) and Henry Fairlie-Cunninghame (d. 1999). An important impetus was the absorption of the Caloola Club in late 1961. This injected significant numbers and talent, and was pivotal to the early development of the outdoor program and journal. Most groups other than the Hunter Region originated as subgroups of the Central Region / Sydney Branch. Reorganised 29 Jun 2019 as Sydney Region Branch by absorption of inactive groups in the central Sydney, Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains districts. There was an express intention for several smaller groups to be formed, such as Inner, Northern and Western Sydney. |
