NPA Webinar: 30x 30: Beyond the 30x30 Headline
Protecting Nature, Strengthening Communities
Join our webinar series exploring how NSW can protect at least 30% of its land and sea—and restore 30% of degraded ecosystems—by 2030.
The series will bring together communities, scientists, landholders, businesses and conservation practitioners to examine what meaningful protection looks like, why it matters and how local ideas can be turned into lasting action. Each webinar will combine expert knowledge with practical examples and opportunities for audience questions and discussion.
3. Beyond the 30x30 Headline: what counts as meaningful protection?
Proposed speakers: Kate Carroll, National Parks Association of NSW (chair & speaker); Dr Michelle Ward, Conservation Scientist Griffith University; Dr Jonathon Howard, Social Scientist, Charles Sturt University; Dr Dan Breen & Naif Rushdi, Marine Biologists/Geographic Information Systems specialists, Auckland University of Technology
Protecting 30% of land and sea is an important global commitment—but reaching the numerical target alone will not stop biodiversity loss.
Drawing on lessons from the July IUCN 30x30 conference, this opening webinar will examine what international progress means for NSW. Our speakers will explore what should count towards 30x30 in NSW and why the quality, location, permanence, connectivity and management of protected areas matter as much as the total area protected.
The session will explain the roles of national parks, nature reserves, marine sanctuaries, private conservation agreements and other effective area-based conservation measures. It will consider how NSW can meet its commitments in a way that delivers genuine, lasting benefits for nature and communities.
