Pilliga Coal Seam Gas Tour |
|
|
|
|
Armidale Branch |
Pat S. |
Would you like to learn more about the coal seam gas exploration in The Pilliga, between Coonabarabran and Narrabri? Santos is operating on an exploration licence with 53 exploratory coal seam gas wells, mostly on public land in Pilliga East State Forest.
Armidale Branch of NPA gathered community support in the past to stop destruction of The Pilliga for industrial charcoal, and again to have large parts reserved as National Park and Conservation Areas. We plan to visit some of the beautiful areas, as well as areas being damaged by coal seam gas mining and its infrastructure.
Tentative Itinerary (this will change depending on the time participants have available)
Day 1: Meet at Pilliga Bore Baths - camp at the bore baths ($5 night) or stay at Pilliga Pub (2 family rooms available, budget accommodation). Relax in the warm artesian pool. Dinner at Pilliga Café (about $25) or self-cater.
Day 2: Leave 9am. Visit the Forest Discovery Centre, Baradine; Sculptures in the Scrub at Dandry Gorge; the Sandstone Caves. Stay at Pilliga Pottery. Accommodation: bed in shared room $30/person/night, or camp $10. Pat will book for the whole group. Woodfired Pizza dinner (about $20) or self-cater. Blue Wren Café offers alcohol, cappuccinos, meals, snacks.
Day 3: Self-cater breakfast (the Blue Wren Cafe breakfast is served too late).
Purchase packed lunch $10-12 or self-cater lunch. Leave Pilliga Pottery 8:30am. An activist may lead the tour. Visit the coal seam gas wells; Bibblewindi plant; see how much forest gets cleared for each well; visit rehabilitated evaporation pond and well sites; see the forest fragmentation caused by pipelines and roads; see forest areas where more wells are planned; view Leewood plant from the gate. We may drive to Wando near Leard Forest for views of the mines in Leard Forest if time permits. Return to Armidale or head home.
Join just for a day or the whole trip. For more information or to register contact Pat. Carry drinking water, fill up with fuel in Narrabri before starting the tour, and passing through Narrabri ending the tour. I use almost a full tank of fuel on the tour in a Subaru Forester, there is no fuel available for long distances in The Pilliga. It is more convenient to self-cater breakfast and lunch and snacks each day. Car sharing and rail travel can be organised.

General Community Event |
Have you heard an owl hooting in the night near your place? Chances are there may be one not too far from you ... and not just any owl, but our largest and one of our most magnificent owls, the Powerful Owl. Although a threatened species, Powerful Owls are making themselves known in Sydney, and keeping them in urban spaces is a crucial part of maintaining healthy ecosystems. Dr Beth Mott will talk about the role of these top predators in urban ecosystems, why the Sydney Basin owl population is so important, and what we can do to help protect and increase the number of owls in our urban areas. There's so much we can do at small and large scales to help owls stay with us, so come along and have a hoot! Hosted by STEP, Friends of Berowra Valley and the Powerful Owl Coalition.

(NEW!!!) For the first time, we are going to circumnavigate Narrabeen Lagoon by kayak - from the Western Basin to the outlet by the Ocean Street Bridge and back again. There is so much to experience (bring your lunch - we'll find a lovely place to take a break). Swim the lagoon from a clean sandy beach or take a plunge in the ocean or nearby rock pool, visit an island in the middle of the lagoon we've never been to before, explore Deep Creek in all its glory, hear about the Royal Family's connection with Middle Creek, be close enough to photograph the over 100 Black Swans that have made the lagoon their home. Plus, find out why Narrabeen Lagoon was a centre of Aboriginal settlement, be amazed at the lagoon's pre-World War 2 German connection and tell us whether you like the idea of an “aquatic walkway” jutting out into the waterway. Start at 9am, finish round 3pm. Hire a quality kayak for just $98pp. No previous kayaking experience necessary, tuition given. Only 8 places remain. Grade easy. Incorporating the soon to be world famous Manly to Bondi Walk, we have planned a series of bi-weekly walks from Barrenjoey to Gerringong. Come join us in this historic & epic adventure. This week we are walking from Kurnell to Cronulla. This great coastal walk follows the coastline from the cliff tops near Kurnell, south to the Boat Harbour Aquatic Reserve, and around the coast to Cronulla Station. Other great features of this walk are the many rock formations around the coast, the small sand dunes along the track, the hanging swamps and the Cape Bailey Lighthouse. For a more relaxing finish you could stop off at the ocean pools in Cronulla before heading to the train station. Slippery sections, rugged sections, rock cliffs. This park protects the largest surviving koala population is greater Sydney. Stokes and O’Hares Creeks enclose a succession of idyllic waterholes, three of which are accessed on this delightful walk. Keep looking up for those koalas! It's December and beautiful waterholes so bring your cossies 🙂 Well formed tracks/fire trails. One steep section of track. Some clambering down sandstone near swimming holes. More magic with my 8th annual Koscie walk. This year we start from Round Mountain, and camp near Derschkos, Grey Mare, Pretty Plain and Wheelers Huts with an optional climb of Dargal Mountain. The usual great scenery and the usual lovely Koscie bushland and flowers. Location: Kosciuszko NP Limit: 15.
