For this meeting we will be turning to a classic of environmental writing: A Sand Country Almanac: and Sketches Here and There by Aldo Leopold, first published 1949, there have been various editions published since then including an Ebook. Leopold gives us a charming observation of change over time. His foreword starts - ‘There are some who can live without wild things, and some who cannot. These essays are the delights and dilemmas of one who cannot’. At our meeting we would like to reflect on Leopold’s writing and consider how we as conservationists accept change over time or should we be trying to direct it? View

Sydney has some beautiful rivers – the Nepean-Hawkesbury, the Parramatta, the Lane Cove, the Georges, the Cooks River. The first peoples of the Sydney region were dependent on these rivers ecosystems. With the growth of Sydney since 1788 many of these rivers have been seriously polluted and degraded from farming, industry, land reclamation, urbanisation and mining. Learn about the history of Sydney’s rivers and why many continue to call for their protection and restoration. View

Guest speaker: Kate Smolski Talk title: Paradise Lost: The Erosion of NSW Environmental Laws, NSW 2011-2018 The lecture will discuss wider trends and include NSW case studies and on how nature and science became collateral damage in the culture wars. The guest speaker for this year's lecture, Kate Smolski, is the CEO of Nature Conservation Council of NSW and also a professional environmental advocate with over fifteen years of experience in grassroots organizing, campaign strategy, media relations, policy and lobbying. A great walk at a comfortable pace with a mixture of historic remnants of the Old Great North Rd, and some beautiful views over the Hawkesbury River and other valleys. Most of this walk follows parts of the convict built road, and a number of information signs along the way give a good insight into the construction and history of the road, making the walk more interesting. Wildflowers and sandstone bushland along Finchs Line track. The last section of the walk, along Wisemans Ferry Rd, has some great views of the cliffs above. The historic Thomas James bridge, just before the end of the walk, is the oldest in-use bridge on mainland Australia. Numbers are strictly limited. Park at GR 342 178 on Wolgan Road. Walk north west, then north, then north east to enter Woolpack Gap. Next, walk around Woolpack Rock and climb the Watch Tower Spur to the west of it. Follow it north west all the way to about GR 332 204, then walk west to the escarpment and descend into Liberty Gully. Visit Liberty Chamber before proceeding to climb the Alcatraz. From here, use Alcatraz Pass to get back to the cars. Scrambling and exposure. Location: Wollemi NP Map: Ben Bullen 89314S View

Find out why this area, part of the Gardens of Stone region, must be protected for future generations. Leave one vehicle at Airly Mountain and drive to Airly Gap. Climb towards Airly Turret, approaching it from the west, then explore the turret and its slots. Continue east through dissected terrain of pagodas and ravines until we join the road which will take us down to the first car. Scrambling and exposure. This should be a very good wild flower walk and there is a nice stand of Blue Gums in Kellys Creek valley. Fire trail, track, off-track with mild scrub, minor scrambling. This is Part 1 of a 60 km, four-day walk, circling Sydney Harbour with the Sydney Harbour and Gladesville Bridges as its eastern and western points. This walk is co-led by Geoffrey Lee, Sheila Walker and Esther Chow. This is a magnificent walk focusing on the Harbour itself – the expanse of water, the bridges, islands, urban bushland and city skyline. The route winds along parts of the foreshore, into bays and on to headlands, through bush, along historic streets and over grand bridges. This walk is north of Lawson, we will be doing the Empire Pass and Dantes Glen, viewing Frederica, St. Michaels and Fairy Falls. Some steep sections, creek crossings, steps in Dantes Glen could be slippery. This is a beautiful walk in this section of the Blue Mountains, the wildflowers might be out, shady rain forest and cool gorges are the enjoiment of this walk. Easy pace and you are welcome to join us. Limit: 8. View
