9 Dec, Sun Beehive Fort Tour
Branch
General Community Event
Walk | A bushwalk of any kind short or longNPWS is conducting a series of guided tours of this historic fortification in Sydney Harbour National Park. We'll explore the rarely opened Beehive Casemate as part of this tour at Middle Head, near Mosman. The Beehive Casement battery was built in 1872 as part of the outer line of defence for Sydney Harbour. Normally all you'll see of the battery are three 3.7m x 2.1m-high openings in a cliff face. On this tour you'll go beneath the cliffs of Obelisk Bay, Sydney Harbour to view the inside of the fortification. You'll also gain an insight into what the soldiers did for entertainment during World War I. It's a good idea to wear sturdy walking shoes, and bring sunscreen, a hat, snacks, drinking water and a torch.

The main group of walkers will head up the closed road from Charlotte Pass to the summit, 19 km return. Small groups will be converging on the summit from other directions – so far we know of two groups walking in from Victoria, one along the Main Range, one from Guthega and one up Hannels Spur. Walkers seeking an easier day can walk from Thredbo Top Station. The several lines of yellow-vested walkers converging on the summit at lunch time will make a great shot from the air, for which Save Kosci is hiring a helicopter. On the summit, please stay on tracks and rocky ground to be kind to the vegetation. Impeccable courtesy to regular tourists please, the media will be watching. After the walk, return to your lodge or drive home (or keep walking, if you are doing the AAWT!) Parking: Please park in Charlotte Pass village and arrange own car shuffles or walk up to Charlotte Pass turning circle (i.e. leave some space near Charlotte Pass for regular tourists). Three Save Kosci support drivers will be assisting with shuffling walkers to the start. Start: Turning circle at Charlotte Pass i.e. at locked gate on Kosciuszko Road. Please arrive between 7:30 and 8:15am for an 8:30am start. Collect yellow vests and sign in. Re-group at Rawsons Pass 11:15 am to 11:45am, rather than head on up at your own pace (better for photos). Accommodation | An activity that involves an overnight stay, using hard-roofed accommodation such as a cabin, hut or hotel.Camp | An activity that involves an overnight stay, usually in a tent.Walk | A bushwalk of any kind short or longWould you like to learn more about the coal seam gas exploration in The Pilliga, between Coonabarabran and Narrabri? Santos is operating on an exploration licence with 53 exploratory coal seam gas wells, mostly on public land in Pilliga East State Forest. Armidale Branch of NPA gathered community support in the past to stop destruction of The Pilliga for industrial charcoal, and again to have large parts reserved as National Park and Conservation Areas. We plan to visit some of the beautiful areas, as well as areas being damaged by coal seam gas mining and its infrastructure. Tentative Itinerary (this will change depending on the time participants have available) Day 1: Meet at Pilliga Bore Baths - camp at the bore baths ($5 night) or stay at Pilliga Pub (2 family rooms available, budget accommodation). Relax in the warm artesian pool. Dinner at Pilliga Café (about $25) or self-cater.
Day 2: Leave 9am. Visit the Forest Discovery Centre, Baradine; Sculptures in the Scrub at Dandry Gorge; the Sandstone Caves. Stay at Pilliga Pottery. Accommodation: bed in shared room $30/person/night, or camp $10. Pat will book for the whole group. Woodfired Pizza dinner (about $20) or self-cater. Blue Wren Café offers alcohol, cappuccinos, meals, snacks.
Day 3: Self-cater breakfast (the Blue Wren Cafe breakfast is served too late). Purchase packed lunch $10-12 or self-cater lunch. Leave Pilliga Pottery 8:30am. An activist may lead the tour. Visit the coal seam gas wells; Bibblewindi plant; see how much forest gets cleared for each well; visit rehabilitated evaporation pond and well sites; see the forest fragmentation caused by pipelines and roads; see forest areas where more wells are planned; view Leewood plant from the gate. We may drive to Wando near Leard Forest for views of the mines in Leard Forest if time permits. Return to Armidale or head home.
Join just for a day or the whole trip. For more information or to register contact Pat. Carry drinking water, fill up with fuel in Narrabri before starting the tour, and passing through Narrabri ending the tour. I use almost a full tank of fuel on the tour in a Subaru Forester, there is no fuel available for long distances in The Pilliga. It is more convenient to self-cater breakfast and lunch and snacks each day. Car sharing and rail travel can be organised. View

Walk | A bushwalk of any kind short or longMt Jellore is an outstanding landmark in the Southern Highlands. The walk follows a fire trail through private property to Mt Jellore. The final 150 metres are very steep and give access to a trig point. A little further on there are spectacular views. Return by the same route. Very steep and rough track, unfenced lookout.

Camp | An activity that involves an overnight stay, usually in a tent.Walk | A bushwalk of any kind short or longMore magic with my 8th annual Koscie walk. This year we start from Round Mountain, and camp near Derschkos, Grey Mare, Pretty Plain and Wheelers Huts with an optional climb of Dargal Mountain. The usual great scenery and the usual lovely Koscie bushland and flowers.
